About Achieve

What Achieve is about

Achieve Therapy and consultancy is a mobile service, meaning therapy is provided in an environment that is familiar to you, which could be your home, school, workplace, or a service setting. 

Occupational Therapy is a client-focused profession, and Occupational Therapists aim to provide support to people of any age or background, to:

- enhance their independence;

- achieve their personal goals;

- participate in meaningful activities; and,

- live a productive and fulfilling life.


The ''occupation'' in Occupational Therapy - refers to the activities we do everyday of our lives, that enable us to live (getting dressed, eating, going to school), give meaning to  our lives, and enable us to achieve the type of life we choose for ourselves. The focus of Occupational Therapy is to assist an individual to overcome challenges they face in doing these activities, and meeting their personal goals, due to injury, illness, disability, pain, trauma, psychological or emotional difficulties, or developmental delay. 


How does Occupational Therapy assist to achieve personal goals?

By providing therapy using activities that are safe, interesting, and give opportunities to overcome challenges due to illness, injury, disability, or other difficulties.

An Occupational therapist, will work with you to 

- set personal goals and facilitate actions toward achieving those goals;

- foster independence and self-direction, to enable you to do the things that are important to you.


Occupational Therapy may involve:

- Activities of daily living (personal care, getting around)

- upper limb rehabilitation

- improving memory and cognitive skills 

- home safety and modifications

- assistive technology prescription and training

- environmental and task adaptation

- ergonomic assessments

- functional capacity assessment and retraining

- independent living assessments

- pain management

- sensory integration

- emotional regulation, social and communication skills

- creative therapy

- achieving developmental milestones, including handwriting and school preparation 

Services

Services Offered Include

 All sessions involve an initial consultation: during which we will meet and talk about your personal goals and interests, what you need assistance with, and what you want to achieve. This will enable us to discuss and develop a collaborative therapy plan.

Individual comprehensive assessments: this is about seeing what you can do, and what you might need some support to do better, in more detail. It may look at a number of areas including: 

  1. Physical, sensory, cognitive, emotional abilities and any assistance needed to complete tasks, 
  2. Modifying environments or tasks (such as using different aids, equipment, mediums, materials)
  3. Learning new skills: such as personal care, home maintenance, mobility, hand function, writing and communication, personal and emotional expression, memory retraining or assistance, social skills, shopping and budgeting, independence training, work skills, developing emotional resilience, cognitive development, health literacy, social advocacy, computer access, physical tolerance and endurance, time management, ergonomics, and so on…
  4. If you wish to explore creativity -  considering and selecting expressive methods that most appeal to you personally.
  5. Providing a written assessment report. If requested, Occupational Therapy assessment reports can be provided, and can also be written according to the guidelines of specific funding bodies (NDIS, Medicare, DVA). 


Developing an individual Occupational Therapy plan: this usually involves planning sessions over a period of time that aim to work toward achieving the goals selected. Individual plans are developed in partnership with each client, and their family members. Therapy plans can also be developed using the guidelines of specific funding bodies, where required (NDIS, Medicare, DVA). 


Individual creative sessions: creativity can be a part of an Occupational Therapy plan, or as a separate goal. Creative sessions focus on learning how to use strategies and techniques to express your personality and vibrancy, and can assist to develop confidence and skills and give voice to your inner journey.

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS 

Susanna Doyle is a Registered Occupational Therapist and creative artist with over 20 years of experience in a range of health, disability, aged care, and mental health settings.  She has a Bachelor of Applied Science Degree in Occupational Therapy, a Master of Public Health and a Doctorate of Philosophy specialising in community aged care. Susanna has worked in government-based services (such as Queensland Health) as well as a community NGO, has led multidisciplinary healthcare teams, and managed health and aged care services. 

Her creative skills include: many years of experience conducting group work in mental health, aged care and disability settings, and she is active in local creative groups. Her background also includes experience conducting health and health service related research, project management and policy development, as well as clinical governance, and health service improvement.
